The Discover Islam Conference is an annual event hosted by the University of Victoria’s Muslim Students Association (MSA). This year’s topic was The Student Experience, highlighting the experience that Muslim students have in Victoria B.C. Some of the main goals of the MSA are to provide a safe and inclusive environment where Muslim students feel safe to practice their religion, and to help inform the surrounding community about Islam.

I think this year’s Discover Islam conference was a great opportunity to hear from people that don’t usually get to voice their opinions. With a diverse panel of students both international and national, it was refreshing to listen about their experiences of how Islam has played a roll in their lives.  —Sajjad Rajput

There is a common consensus within our group that you cannot truly accept someone without knowing them. As a community we welcome the questions and we want to everyone to feel comfortable coming to us. However, one big barrier that we all have is that we’re afraid to offend. Therefore, through our conferences and events, we aim to create these safe environments that allow for open dialogue.
