In 2022, Royal Roads University practicum students Karen Park and Jesús Espinoza set out to capture the vibrancy of Victoria’s ethnocultural communities through film. Guided by then–Director of Communications Kaye Abellana and with editing support from Tracy Guinchard, they created a series of short videos that celebrate the people, places, and traditions that shape our city.

This featured piece shines a light on Victoria’s Filipino community, the Bayanihan Cultural Centre, and the annual Mabuhay! celebration—a joyful gathering of music, dance, food, and connection.

Karen and Jesus brought their fresh perspectives as talented newcomer creatives, weaving together storytelling and imagery that honour both heritage and community spirit.

We’re proud to welcome practicum students and interns throughout the year, offering space for emerging storytellers to create meaningful work while building their professional portfolios.
